Outback Travel

Recently I went on a three week journey into Queensland with another family member, where we didn’t have everything booked before leaving. We did over 4400kms driving and ended up visiting a few museums along the way. The funny thing was nearly all the driving was not on the same road, only for short sections.

Usually, my holidays tend to be solo adventures, but last year mum and I had planned a journey that would take us to Longreach and Winton to see outback towns. If you ask many people they couldn’t tell you where we ended up and I spoke to a few at work who never heard of these places. This type of trip required your own vehicle as there is little in the way of public transport to many of the towns we visited if the transport existed at all. Then you head into communications issues where there are no mobile phone reception depending on where you are. Random Wifi does become helpful.

Before we left, we had booked two nights in Roma and then realised later that there was a film festival on in Winton of all places, so had to stay elsewhere as there was no accommodation. Another place we had to email the pub as there was no online booking platform. Longreach we did upgrade where we were staying as I had booked a Donga, that was a backpackers with shared bathrooms and ended up in a motel instead as the same property was owned by the same property.

There were no huge issues, but you can see how people can become stuck if they are not aware especially when many roads are isolated between towns. We had one three hour journey where there were only 2 cars going in the other direction the entire time. That was between Eromanga and Windorah. I think we found two of the most remote dinosaur museums too. One being in Eromanga and the other in Winton.

I am glad I got to see parts of a country and getting to stay in interesting pubs along the way where the food was pretty decent. Would I do a similar trip again, for sure.
